When can I enroll in Medicare?

Spread the love

Once you have determined whether you need Medicare or not, you can enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period. This is the 7-month period that begins on the 1st day of the month 3 months before your birth month, and ends 3 months after. Your coverage will begin on the 1st of your birth month.

For example, if your birthday is on July 23, your Initial Enrollment Period would begin on April 1 and end on Oct 31. Your coverage would begin on July 1.

Additional considerations:

  • If your birthday falls on the 1st of the month, everything would begin one month earlier. (Don’t ask us why they did this).
  • If you are working or have “creditable” health insurance coverage, you would be able to enroll when your coverage ends, during a Special Enrollment Period.
