How to enroll in Medicare Part A and B on the Social Security website

This is a quick guide on enrolling in Medicare to help you get the process rolling to be covered by Medicare. You can go directly to the application. There’s also more information about Medicare on the Social Security website.

1. Go to http://socialsecurity.gov and click Online Services

2. Open up Apply for Social Security benefits

 

3. Click on Medicare – “Apply for benefits”

4. Click on “Start a New Application” button

 

5. Click on “Next” button

6. Proceed with the rest of the application

Reminder that if you wish to receive Part B (Medical Coverage), for your Medicare coverage. be sure to select it.

7. Congrats, you have submitted your application

Upon completion, you will receive an email confirming your application has been submitted. A Social Security representative may get in touch if they have questions but otherwise you will receive an approval confirmation in 2-3 weeks and you will also receive the red, blue and white Medicare card.

Once enrolled in Medicare, on your coverage start date, you will receive health coverage that covers 80% of your health bills. It’s then a good idea to sign up for a supplemental plan so that you’re 100% covered. You would also want to sign up for a drug plan to avoid a penalty when you sign up after your Initial Enrollment Period.
